The lyrics to “Laugh at Me” speak for themselves, so no need to write about them. The anger/frustration/pain upon which they’re constructed tell us something about Sonny Bono’s personality that maybe wasn’t clear to the general public in 1965: beneath the toothy grin, fringed suede boots, and Ringo knockoff haircut, was a complex man who knew perfectly well what he was doing and how it was percieved by others. (Also I love the bell: Why a bell?)
I could have used this song around 1990. “Do Me” by Bel Biv Devoe wasn’t giving me anything I could use.
